After a disturbing discovery, Lay’s undertakes a major rebranding: 42% of consumers were unaware that its chips are made from potatoes

Lay’s hopes you’ll remember its humble, home – grown origins. The company that owns this chip behemoth is giving the brand a transformation fit for a movie montage: removing its artificial dyes, updating the logo, and featuring a potato right on the packaging.

Don’t forget the potatoes. New bags—with a matte finish and designed to resemble wood planks (similar to a potato crate)—will contain the chips with updated ingredient lists. Lay’s assures that the baked, kettle – cooked, and original chips won’t have a different taste; they’ll just lack any synthetic colors or flavors:

  • The redesign will also include a new logo that looks like the sun, photos of potatoes on the bag, and the statement “Made with real potatoes.”
  • A 2021 survey revealed that 42% of consumers were unaware that Lay’s chips were made from potatoes.
  • These changes are happening as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. encourages companies to abandon artificial ingredients.

Overall situation: Lay’s contributes about of PepsiCo’s annual sales, but its sales have declined each quarter for the past three years. Consumers across all income levels have been turning away from classic snack brands due to rising prices.—MM
