The Allure of the Song Dynasty and the Festivity of the Spring Festival: Hangzhou, China Ushered in the Year of the Horse

HANGZHOU, China, Jan. 29, 2026 — The Chinese Lunar Year of the Horse is approaching. As the horse symbolizes vitality and journeys, it ushers in the perfect season for spring outings, and Hangzhou, the capital city of east China’s Zhejiang Province, is an ideal destination.

Hangzhou, which is home to three World Heritage Sites including the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, West Lake, and the Grand Canal, not only features elegant lakes and mountains but also has a millennium of culture from the Wuyue Kingdom (907 – 978) and the Southern Song Dynasty (1217 – 1279). On January 23, an interesting and refined cultural campaign to celebrate the Year of the Horse was launched in Hangzhou. Co – hosted by Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV and Tourism and the People’s Government of Shangcheng District, the celebration will last until March 4.

For overseas visitors, Hangzhou seamlessly combines convenience and entertainment. On West Lake, the Blessing boats with horse – shaped lanterns combine rowboats with custom Song – style flying horse lanterns, offering an unforgettable cruise.

Bronze artist Zhu Bingren’s remarkable installation featuring a bronze horse has made its first appearance. More than 70 Year of the Horse murals decorate streets, scenic spots, and museums, integrating Song patterns with horse motifs.

Thirteen scenic areas are participating in cellphone brand vivo’s “Capture Your Hangzhou” charity campaign, providing free family photos. Districts and counties have held over 100 events to showcase local attractions. Rural folk – themed Spring Festival products are available on Youxiake, a tourism social – networking app.

Coinciding with the global broadcast of the historical drama Peaceful Times, exploring the culture of the Wuyue Kingdom is a major highlight. Visitors can explore Hangzhou while following the hit drama and collect stamps at places like King Qian Temple, Liuhe Pagoda, and Wuyue Culture Museum, which witnessed the kingdom’s rise and fall.

There are also five themed routes available, including Zen experiences and leisurely lake – and – mountain tours.

The Spring Festival Song – style Blessings Bazaar has a warm and lively charm. Try intangible cultural heritage crafts and enjoy Hangzhou specialties such as West Lake lotus root starch and Southern Song pastries.

Free handwritten “Fu” (blessing in Chinese) characters are being given away. These are core symbols of the Chinese New Year that convey people’s wishes for a happy life.
