The 13th China (Mianyang) Science and Technology City International High-tech Expo Commences, Demonstrating Mianyang’s Capability in Scientific and Technological Innovation Conversion

MIANYANG, China, Sept. 26, 2025 — The 13th China (Mianyang) Science and Technology City International High-tech Expo (referred to hereafter as “the Expo”) commenced on September 26. This year, the event prominently showcased advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and the low-altitude economy. Notably, it also introduced, for the first time, a “Specialized Industrial Products Exhibition and Sales Zone” designed to streamline the transition of innovations from research to commercialization.

Having evolved over twelve years, the Expo has cemented its status as a highly influential platform for scientific and technological exchange across western China. The event’s Organizing Committee reports that the Expo has, to date, facilitated the commercialization of more than 2,000 scientific and technological breakthroughs, drawn in over 5,000 exhibiting companies, and generated a cumulative transaction value exceeding 100 billion yuan. The ongoing growth of the exhibition underscores the increasing vibrancy of its host city, Mianyang, in scientific and technological innovation.

As China’s only officially designated Science and Technology City, Mianyang boasts a deep-rooted foundation for innovation. Since the national initiative to establish Mianyang as a Science and Technology City began in 2000, the city has, over the past 25 years, developed China’s inaugural large-scale scientific instrument sharing platform. It currently hosts 7 national key laboratories, 4 national engineering technology research centers, and more than 260 national and provincial innovation platforms, thereby providing robust support for advancements across numerous sectors.

Mianyang has recently seen significant breakthroughs in scientific and technological achievements. Within the medical sector, the successful creation of a medical cyclotron has facilitated the domestic production of medical isotopes, effectively addressing a critical material shortage for China in the realm of precision cancer diagnosis and treatment. In advanced materials, flexible display materials developed by Mianyang-based enterprises have entered large-scale mass production, with their core technologies recognized as among the most advanced globally.

The city has also established efficient mechanisms for translating scientific achievements into practical applications. Through dedicated university-enterprise matchmaking events and innovative models such as the bundled transformation of “technology + team + equity,” Mianyang successfully bridges the divide between research and market demands. These initiatives contributed to the city’s technology contract transaction value reaching 20 billion yuan in 2024.

The transition from research to industrial application is exemplified by several local initiatives. Mianyang GiaStar Magnetic Material Co., Ltd. has engineered a heavy-rare-earth-free neodymium iron boron material, which cuts production costs by 15-20% while sustaining optimal performance. A joint effort between the China Academy of Engineering Physics and Changhong Group has resulted in the e-Flash radiotherapy device, capable of “millisecond-level precision treatment.” Moreover, humanoid robots from Sichuan Tianlian Company are currently operational in industrial environments. Mianyang’s robotics industry is anticipated to surpass an output value of 3 billion yuan by 2025.

The sustained hosting of the high-tech expo acts as a vital showcase for Mianyang and China to demonstrate their scientific capabilities, thereby accelerating the city’s integration into the global innovation network. To date, Mianyang has forged international sister-city or friendly cooperative relationships with 36 cities across 24 countries and engages in collaborations with enterprises from nations such as Germany and Japan in various frontier fields. By embracing this open and cooperative strategy, Mianyang has emerged as a premier model for scientific innovation and industrial transformation in western China.
