Colombia Hosts Global World Cities Day 2025 Observance

BOGOTA, Colombia, Nov. 04, 2025 — Bogota, Colombia’s capital, hosted the Global Observance of World Cities Day 2025 and the awards ceremony for the 3rd cycle of the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award) on October 31 (local time). During the event, the winners of this year’s Shanghai Award were revealed as Bogota (Colombia), Algiers (Algeria), Incheon (South Korea), Medina (Saudi Arabia), and Espoo (Finland).

Ms. Anaclaudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, along with Mr. Ni Hong, Minister of China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, and government representatives from Colombia, Mexico, and other nations, attended and spoke at the event. Shanghai Mayor Mr. Gong Zheng provided the opening remarks for the awards ceremony.

Furthermore, the English editions of the Shanghai Manual: A Guide for Sustainable Urban Development in the 21st Century·2025 Annual Report and the UMF-Shanghai Adapted Index Application Report were officially launched at the venue.

The Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award) is an international accolade jointly established by UN-Habitat and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. This award also functions as a crucial platform for Shanghai’s engagement in global governance and its efforts to advance both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda.

Following its initial international presentation during its 2nd cycle last year, the Shanghai Award was once again held abroad this year. The 3rd cycle of the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities (Shanghai Award) particularly highlighted achievements in areas such as ensuring adequate housing for various needs, collaboratively developing people-centered smart cities, promoting green and resilient development in response to climate change, and fostering effective governance for dynamic urban environments.
