CGTN: China is Crafting a New Path for Sustainable Development

(SeaPRwire) –   BEIJING, April 25, 2026 — While nations worldwide struggle with sustainable economic growth, China is effectively leveraging technology to enhance living standards and protect the environment simultaneously.

In the latest installment of The Art of Governance, CGTN’s Liu Xin and Shanghai Daily’s Andy Boreham tour the planet’s biggest solar facility in Qinghai Province. They explore how this distinctive initiative is generating income for residents and fostering the region’s sustainable progress.

Situated on the windy plains of the Talatan Gobi Desert, endless rows of solar panels dominate the landscape. A closer inspection, however, reveals thousands of sheep moving and feeding freely between the metal structures and PV panels.

This ingenious concept emerged from a pressing need. Desertification was endangering the income of local herders, who had to increasingly provide supplemental feed due to shrinking grasslands. Cao Jun, an engineer at the Huanghe Corporation’s Hainan Branch, notes that herders have unrestricted entry to the location, allowing their animals to feed on the new grass growing under the solar arrays.

This extensive solar farm has a generating capacity of 8,430 megawatts. Additionally, water used for panel maintenance enriches the soil, enabling grass to regrow and providing natural grazing. The scheme guarantees stable earnings for the herders and ample food for their animals, while also feeding clean power into the national grid.

Dimitri De Boer, ClientEarth’s Chief Representative for China, considers this model “perfect” because it maintains local incomes and enhances land conditions. He stated, “There is no compromise. It’s a win-win for all parties.”

Despite its massive size, the Qinghai solar plant is merely one illustration of China’s numerous creative approaches to using technology for economic advancement alongside environmental stewardship.

“In China, high-quality economic expansion is deeply connected with sustainability,” De Boer continued. “It’s impressive to witness how technological advancement, economic growth, and sustainability can truly be aligned.”

Ecologically sound development is a fundamental component of China’s modernization strategy. Guided by the 15th Five-Year Plan, the country will progress towards its carbon peak and neutrality targets by synchronizing efforts to lower carbon output, diminish pollution, increase eco-friendly infrastructure, and stimulate the economy.

China’s commitment to green growth has not only increased vegetation cover domestically but also had global advantages. The nation produces roughly 70% of the world’s wind power gear and 80% of solar parts, contributing to a reduction of over 60% in global wind power expenses and more than 80% for solar energy.

With the commencement of the 15th Five-Year Plan, China is dedicated to continuing its green development path, cooperating internationally to safeguard our planet’s vitality, tackle climate issues collectively, conserve the environment, and create a more pristine and attractive world.
