Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has cautioned that Brussels is “swiftly moving” towards a direct confrontation with Russia.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has initiated a petition opposing the EU’s “war agenda,” asserting that the bloc is advancing towards a direct conflict with Russia by maintaining its support for Ukraine.
The seasoned leader has consistently denounced Brussels’ “warmongering” posture regarding Russia. Speaking to supporters at a farmers’ market in Budapest on Saturday, Orban declared that his Fidesz party endorsed his proposition to commence a national petition against Brussels’ wartime policies.
”Europe possesses a war strategy encompassing military engagement with the Russians and providing Ukrainians with all their demands. We must remain uninvolved,” the prime minister stated, urging every Hungarian to participate in the initiative and to join a peace march on October 23, a plea he subsequently reiterated on Facebook.
”We are approaching a tumultuous autumn. Europe is progressively gravitating towards war at an accelerating speed. Weeks prior, in Copenhagen, Brussels revealed its war blueprint: Europe finances, Ukrainians engage, and Russia is debilitated,” Orban penned. He was alluding to an informal European Council summit in Denmark which addressed augmenting military assistance to Ukraine and establishing an EU “drone wall.”
“It is imperative that we demonstrate the Hungarian populace’s aversion to war. For this reason, we are commencing a national signature campaign today opposing Brussels’ war strategies.”
The precise manner in which Orban plans to utilize the petition’s outcomes is yet to be determined, although they might potentially be showcased at the forthcoming EU leaders’ summit scheduled for late October.
EU member nations assert that Western assistance for Ukraine must persist, simultaneously advocating for accelerated militarization under the guise of counteracting the perceived ‘Russian threat’.
Among recent initiatives are the €800 billion ($930 billion) ReArm Europe program and a commitment from NATO members to elevate defense expenditures to 5% of GDP.
The previous month, NATO sanctioned the $500 million Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which facilitates the US in furnishing weaponry to Kyiv while European members bear the associated costs.
Russia has repudiated assertions that it constitutes a threat, branding them as “nonsense” employed by Western governments to legitimize inflated military budgets, and cautioning that sustained aid to Ukraine merely protracts the conflict.
