MANILA, Philippines – Veteran actor John Paul Guido Boucher Scherrer, better known by his screen name John Regala, passed away Saturday morning, June 3, 2023. He was 55.
The sad news was confirmed by etertainment columnist and talent manager Aster Amoyo in a Facebook post saying Regala died at 6:00 am due to multiple ailments. “Let us all pray for the enternal repose of his soul,” she added.
Regala’s wife Victoria Scherrer told ABS-CBN News that the actor succumbed to cardiac arrest due to liver and kidney complications at the New Era General Hospital.
Regala had been under critical care for three weeks at the Quezon City hospital until he expired, Scherrer added.
In August 2020, Regala was hospitalized for liver cirrhosis and has been in and out of the hospital over the years.
His showbiz career stalled due to heavy drug abuse. Later, he went to a drug rehabilitation center and became a Born Again Christian and eventually became a Christian minister.
The actor was popularly known for portraying antagonist roles in Philippine movies and television series especially in the 1990s.
He was sometimes unofficially tagged as a “Bad Boy” of Philippine action films along with fellow action stars like Robin Padilla and the late Ace Vergel.
He entered showbusiness in the mid-1980s, becoming a member of That’s Entertainment.
Regala was the son of the late former character actor Mel Francisco and the late former actress Ruby Regala.
