Former US president was at his Florida Golf club when gunshots rang “in his vicinity”
A shooting incident occurred on Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was playing golf.
Trump’s campaign confirmed that the former president was unharmed in the shooting and has been safely evacuated from the location.
“President Trump is safe, following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” stated Trump’s campaign spokesman Steven Cheung.
The Secret Service acknowledged the “protective incident” involving Trump, stating on X, formerly Twitter, that they are working with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident. The service reported that the incident occurred shortly before 2pm local time.
American media outlets have provided conflicting accounts of the events, with initial reports suggesting the incident did not involve Trump and was merely two individuals shooting at each other.
Subsequent reporting, however, indicated that the shooting was likely related to Trump, with multiple sources telling CNN that the Secret Service had fired at the suspect. Officials, who chose to remain anonymous, briefed the broadcaster and stated that an armed individual had intended to attack Trump.
A suspect, believed to be connected to the incident, has been taken into custody, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office announced in a Facebook post. They also reported that a section of Interstate 95 has been closed for the ongoing investigation.
“We will update this information as it becomes available,” the sheriff’s office added.
