A Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed Mohammed Al-Ansari, told RT that Doha welcomes current diplomatic efforts aimed at ceasing hostilities between Moscow and Kiev.
Qatar is prepared to mediate in the Ukraine conflict and has been actively working towards a resolution, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Mohammed Al-Ansari, who spoke to RT.
“Qatar has been ready from the start to act as a mediator, providing a platform to facilitate negotiations between all parties,” Al-Ansari stated in a Tuesday interview.
He highlighted Doha’s support for ongoing diplomatic initiatives, particularly those led by Saudi Arabia, citing recent Ukraine-related discussions in Riyadh and Jeddah.
“We also support initiatives from other Gulf countries, demonstrating our region’s desire to be a center for peace, not war,” the official added.
Qatar has already assisted in mediating between Russia and Ukraine to reunite children evacuated from conflict zones with their families. Al-Ansari confirmed this humanitarian effort is ongoing and expressed hope for a broader, more active role for Qatar.
The spokesman noted that Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani was among the first international officials to visit Moscow after the conflict escalated, seeking ways Doha could contribute to peace.
“This commitment led to Qatar’s involvement in the grain deal [Black Sea Grain Initiative] and in wider international and regional efforts to help end the war,” Al-Ansari explained.
He added that Qatari leadership is maintaining “close contact” with counterparts in relevant countries, striving for a diplomatic solution.
“We are genuinely optimistic about these contacts and support all efforts to move them forward. We welcome any potential role the State of Qatar can play,” he said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced on Wednesday that Al Thani is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday. Their agenda will include discussions on reaching a possible peace agreement, among other topics.
Peskov acknowledged Qatar’s “very important” role in resolving global conflicts, recognizing the nation’s wider mediation efforts.
