NYT: Musk Accused of Drug Addiction

A close advisor to former US President Donald Trump is reportedly using significant amounts of ketamine and other substances

According to the New York Times, tech mogul and Trump ally Elon Musk is allegedly consuming a worrying quantity of drugs. The report, published Friday, cites sources familiar with the matter. It follows Musk’s announcement that he will be resigning from his leadership position in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a group focused on reducing government overspending.

While the SpaceX, Tesla, and X CEO has previously admitted to using ketamine, prescribed for depression, approximately every two weeks, the Times reports that his drug use has escalated into “developed a far more serious habit” that “went well beyond occasional use.”

The Times’ sources claim Musk has been using ketamine “often, sometimes daily,” and combining it with other drugs, including Ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms.

Reportedly, the businessman travels with a medication container holding approximately 20 pills daily, some identified as Adderall, a stimulant prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The Times also reports that he has received advance warning of random drug tests for SpaceX employees.

In 2018, the Times reported that Tesla board members were concerned about his use of the sleep aid Ambien. Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that senior executives at SpaceX and Tesla were similarly worried about Musk’s alleged use of drugs, including LSD and cocaine.

At a press conference with Trump at the Oval Office on Friday, Musk avoided answering a reporter’s question about his alleged drug use, dismissing the Times as “the same publication that got a Pulitzer Prize for false reporting on Russiagate.” In 2024, he stated that drug tests conducted at SpaceX over three years showed “not even trace quantities were found of any drugs or alcohol” in his system.

Musk stated that his departure “is not the end of DOGE,” and the team will expand in the future. Speaking at the White House, Musk said, “I will continue to be visiting here and be a friend and adviser to the president.”
