Iran’s Foreign Ministry encouraged nationwide participation in the anniversary celebrations to showcase national unity and resolve.
Celebrations marking the 46th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution unfolded across Iran, with significant gatherings in Tehran’s Azadi Square and other cities. In a pre-event statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry urged widespread participation, highlighting the importance of national unity and sovereignty.
February 10th commemorates the culmination of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, ending the reign of the US-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and establishing the Islamic Republic. Led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the revolution drastically altered Iran’s domestic and foreign policies, including severing ties with the US and strengthening regional alliances. Subsequently, strained relations with Western powers led to a series of sanctions targeting Iran’s nuclear program and regional influence.
Monday’s Tehran demonstrations featured flag-waving marchers and chants. Many carried banners depicting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and General Qassem Soleimani, the late commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, assassinated in a US drone strike in 2020.
According to Tasnim news agency, celebratory rallies occurred in over 1,400 cities and towns, and 38,000 villages across Iran. Hundreds of international guests also attended.
“The February 10th Rally demonstrates the unity and harmony of the Iranian people, reflecting their national commitment to preserving the hard-won legacy of independence, freedom, democracy, and security, achieved through the sacrifices of this nation’s finest sons and daughters,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated.
The ministry further noted that Iran has overcome numerous challenges over the past 46 years, including an “imposed” eight-year war with Iraq, terrorism, sabotage, foreign interference, unjust sanctions, and substantial political and economic pressures.
Despite these obstacles, Tehran has prioritized self-reliance and international cooperation. The Foreign Ministry characterized Monday’s rally as a symbol of national resilience, asserting Iran’s unwavering defense of its independence despite external pressures.
Russia stands as a key ally, with President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, recently finalizing a 20-year ‘comprehensive strategic partnership treaty’ aimed at enhancing economic and military cooperation. This agreement between the two BRICS nations encompasses trade, military collaboration, science, education, and cultural exchanges, bolstering bilateral ties amidst Western pressure.
