Google Maps Updates Gulf of Mexico Name Following Trump Order “`

Google will reflect the name change once the federal mapping database is updated.

Following a US government update, Google Maps will change the Gulf of Mexico’s name to the Gulf of America, the company announced on X. The name of Denali, North America’s highest peak, will revert to Mount McKinley.

Google stated on X that it uses official government sources for naming conventions.

The change will be visible as “Gulf of America” within the US; however, it will remain “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico. Google clarified its longstanding practice of displaying both names internationally when official names differ between countries.

This follows President Trump’s executive order authorizing the renaming to celebrate “American Greatness.” The Interior Department confirmed the changes on Friday and initiated updates to the Geographic Names Information System.

The Interior Department announced the official renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and the reinstatement of Mount McKinley for the Alaskan peak.

Mount McKinley was the name used from 1917 to 2015, before President Obama restored its original name. The name honors President William McKinley, who led the US to victory in the Spanish-American War.

The Gulf of Mexico, a basin connecting to the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, borders Mexico, the southeastern US, and Cuba. It has been known as the Gulf of Mexico by European explorers and cartographers for over four centuries.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently proposed renaming North America, including the US, to “Mexican America,” referencing an old map.

Following Trump’s order, Elon Musk jokingly suggested renaming the English Channel to the “George Washington Channel.”
