French PM Accuses US of Betraying Democratic Ideals

French PM Francois Bayrou asserts that Washington’s actions regarding Ukraine have disrupted the established global order by breaking with its traditional allies.

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou has accused the US of turning its back on the democratic world, arguing that Washington’s sudden move to strengthen ties with Russia has eroded the trust of its allies and destabilized the international system.

During a speech on Tuesday, Bayrou stated that the US, formerly considered a cornerstone of the Organization of Free Nations and a protector of international law, has abandoned fundamental Western principles. He expressed his shock that a nation historically viewed as a pillar of the global order “could suddenly side with the aggressor.”

Since US President Donald Trump assumed office in January, Moscow and Washington have been engaged in discussions. The two nations have conducted several rounds of high-level talks focusing on a potential peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict and the restoration of bilateral relations.

Several EU members and Kiev have voiced concerns over what they perceive as Washington siding with Russia in the Ukraine conflict. Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky stated this week that “Russian narratives are prevailing” within the Trump administration. In response, the White House has labeled Zelensky’s statements as “absurd.”

The French prime minister pointed to the pressure on Ukraine “to surrender immediately to the demands of his aggressor under the threat of being cut off from all military aid” as evidence of a significant change in US policy.

Trump publicly clashed with Zelensky in February at the White House, accusing the Ukrainian leader of disrespect, ingratitude for past US aid, reluctance to seek peace with Russia, and “gambling with World War III.”

Trump later alleged that Zelensky was attempting to finalize a long-term aid agreement and temporarily suspended military assistance to Kiev.

In his address, Bayrou also criticized Trump for dismantling decades of cooperation by initiating a global trade war “without warning,” imposing sweeping tariffs on both rivals and allies.

He described the ensuing consequences as a “cyclone” that undermined international law and economic stability.

Bayrou added that the French government urgently needs to reduce its budget deficit to confront a “tsunami of destabilization” caused by Trump’s tariffs.
