Former president Fidel Ramos passes away at 94


MANILA, Philippines – Former president Fidel V. Ramos also known as ‘FVR’ passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022. He was 94.

Reports said that Ramos succumbed to complications of COVID-19. He was treated at the Makati Medical Center.

Ramos served as the country’s 12th president from 1992 to 1998.

He became Chief of the Philippine Constabulary and Vice Chief-of-Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines during the term of President Ferdinand Marcos.

During the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, Ramos decided to break away from the administration of Marcos and pledge allegiance to the newly established government of President Corazon Aquino.

Prior to his election as president, Ramos served in the cabinet of  Aquino as chief-of-staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and later as Secretary of National Defense from 1986 to 1991.

Ramos earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the National University. He also studied at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

He married Amelita Martinez in October 1954 and they had five children.
