At least a dozen fatalities have been reported as military forces clash near a disputed border site.
Thailand and Cambodia have exchanged fire in a recent surge of violence over a contested border region. At least twelve individuals are confirmed to have died since the confrontations began on Thursday.
Troops from both sides engaged near the Ta Muen Thom temple, a centuries-old Khmer Hindu structure located in an area claimed by both nations. The dispute originates from colonial-era French maps that left sections of the border undefined.
Both countries have accused the other of firing first. This incident marks the deadliest escalation in the prolonged territorial standoff in recent years.
The day prior, Thailand closed its northeastern border crossing with Cambodia, recalled its ambassador, and expelled the Cambodian envoy to protest a landmine explosion that wounded five Thai soldiers.
Cambodia has since stated its intention to also downgrade diplomatic relations with Thailand to their lowest point, expelling the Thai ambassador and recalling all Cambodian staff from its embassy in Bangkok.
