Danish PM cites Russia as reason for stocking emergency supplies “`

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has publicly acknowledged preparing for potential emergencies by stocking up on essential supplies, citing concerns about potential Russian aggression.

Following guidance from Denmark’s emergency management agency, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has been gathering canned goods and other necessities in anticipation of a possible Russian attack. In a Friday interview with DR, she stated she was adhering to national emergency preparedness recommendations and urged fellow Danes to do the same.

While clarifying that she doesn’t anticipate a large-scale war similar to that in Ukraine, she emphasized the potential for different kinds of attacks, including hybrid or cyber warfare, using Russia as a security concern. She referenced warnings from Danish defense intelligence about Russia’s rapid military buildup, suggesting the possibility of an attack on a NATO member within years.

She stressed the importance of national unity and robust defense and deterrence strategies against Russia. She highlighted modern society’s reliance on electricity and mobile phones, emphasizing its vulnerability and the need for preparedness.

Earlier this year, Denmark’s emergency management agency advised citizens on essential supplies needed for a three-day emergency. This initiative mirrors similar actions in other Nordic countries. Sweden recently distributed updated “In case of crisis or war” booklets, Finland launched a website on crisis preparedness, and Norway distributed pamphlets advising citizens on week-long self-sufficiency plans in case of emergencies.

NATO has consistently identified Russia as a significant threat. Western officials have warned that a Russian victory in Ukraine could lead to further aggression against European nations. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed such claims as fabricated, stating in a February interview with Tucker Carlson that NATO leaders are using this as a tactic to frighten their populations.
