Source of the Philippine Star revealed the cause of death. “A separate source and close friend also confirmed about Cherie’s passing after a battle with cancer.”

In February, Gil left the Philippines and moved to New York. She made the revelation in a cover story for MEGA magazine where she sported a bald head as a symbol of rebirth.

“I’m completely finding myself and coming to terms with who I really am. It’s just great to have this opportunity and to be alive to start over. It’s like a rebirth of sorts,” she said.

In the same interview, Cherie opened up about undergoing therapy and counseling. And as she starts a new chapter in her life, she wants to let people know that her decision to cut her hair is “symbolic to my personal growth.”

Evangeline Rose Gil Eigenmann or simply Cherie Gil was dubbed as the “La Primera Contravida” for her acting prowess and contributions to Philippine Cinema.

She is a FAMAS Award winner, a recipient of Ani ng Dangal (Harvest of Honor) award by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and a Hall of Famer at the Metro Manila Film Festival in the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category.

In 2015, she bagged the highly coveted “Best Actress” trophy at the ASEAN International Film Awards.

Gil started her career as a child actress at the age of 9, and is best known for her role as Lavinia Arguelles in Bituing Walang Ningning where she delivered the iconic line “You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat!” to Dorina, Sharon Cuneta’s character.
