ITRI Celebrates New Laureates and Launches Innovation Week

HSINCHU, Taiwan, Sept. 16, 2025 — The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) today hosted its 2025 ITRI Laureate Ceremony, recognizing five distinguished leaders for their significant contributions across semiconductors, engineering, and biomedicine. The honored laureates include Dr. Y.J. Mii, Executive Vice President and Co-Chief Operating Officer at TSMC; Mr. John T. Yu, Group Chairman of CTCI; Dr. Chang-Hai Tsai, Chairman of China Medical University (CMU) and Healthcare System; Dr. Wei-Jen Lo, former Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy Development at TSMC; and Dr. Yen-Hsuan Ni, Director of the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) Healthcare System Administration Center and Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at NTU College of Medicine.

Taiwan’s Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao attended the event, commending the five laureates for their exceptional achievements and impact on national industrial progress. In her address, she also lauded ITRI for its crucial role in advancing Taiwan’s technological innovation, noting its breakthroughs in semiconductors, biomedicine, and engineering. She highlighted ITRI’s position as a vital connector between industry, government, academia, and research, exerting considerable influence across traditional industries, AI applications, and healthcare. Vice President Hsiao expressed her hope that ITRI would sustain its efforts, becoming a driving force for global change and the betterment of Taiwan.

ITRI Chairman Tsung-Tsong Wu underscored the diverse expertise of this year’s laureates, which he said reflects Taiwan’s strengths in advanced manufacturing, sustainable engineering, and biomedical innovation. He stated that over the past 52 years, ITRI has consistently supported government policies and industry needs, progressing from semiconductors and ICT to the Five Trusted Industry Sectors, while also spearheading AI adoption and digital transformation. ITRI plans to focus on cross-domain integration and lead emerging fields such as humanoid robots, drones, and unmanned vehicles to help Taiwan secure early advantages globally. “This year marks the inaugural ITRI Innovation Week, where we will present our latest R&D achievements to industry stakeholders and international partners, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration,” Wu announced.

The five laureates conveyed their gratitude for the honor and shared their visions for future collaborations. Dr. Mii emphasized ITRI’s ongoing potential to bridge crucial technology gaps, thereby helping Taiwan maintain its key role in the global supply chain. Mr. Yu highlighted CTCI’s partnership with ITRI on the world’s first semiconductor wastewater reclamation plant at Tainan Science Park, calling it a landmark in sustainable engineering. Dr. Tsai advocated for deeper collaboration to advance precision medicine, AI applications, and new drug development. Dr. Lo expressed confidence in ITRI’s capacity to build a world-class platform integrating chips, data centers, and application software to meet the increasing demands of AI. Dr. Ni praised Taiwan’s interdisciplinary strengths and ITRI’s unique ability to combine biotechnology, ICT, and AI for a competitive edge in healthcare innovation.

The 2025 ITRI Innovation Week is scheduled from September 15 to 19, taking place across the Institute’s Hsinchu and Tainan campuses. It will feature events such as the Laureate Meeting, 2035 Cross-Disciplinary Innovation Forum, Smart Healthcare Forum, South Taiwan Industrial Transformation Forum, and Robotics & Drone Forum. The co-occurring IP & Startup Week will concentrate on intellectual property strategies and entrepreneurial prospects, while a technology exhibition will showcase AI-driven solutions across various industries, illustrating how innovation translates into practical applications.
