Colombia Launches National Wildfire Monitoring Program Using OroraTech’s Satellite Technology
Colombia leads Latin America by becoming the first nation to implement a nationwide satellite-based wildfire monitoring system, safeguarding communities and ecosystems through a public-private collaboration.
Bogotá, Colombia – October 30th, 2025 – Colombia has become the first country in Latin America to enhance its National Disaster Risk Management System by introducing a country-wide wildfire detection initiative powered by satellite technology. This undertaking is the result of a new collaboration between the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and OroraTech, a global leader in wildfire intelligence, represented locally by GeoSpatial.
This agreement signifies the commencement of a national pilot program utilizing OroraTech’s Wildfire Solution (WFS) platform. This platform integrates thermal satellite imagery with AI-driven analytics to detect and track wildfires almost instantaneously. By providing continuous oversight of wildfire activity across Colombia, the program aims to protect vital ecosystems, shorten emergency response times, and reduce risks for communities vulnerable to fire.
“Through this partnership, Colombia is boosting its risk knowledge capabilities by investing in a cutting-edge wildfire detection and monitoring infrastructure that will help protect our people, environment, and biodiversity,” stated Ana Milena Prada, Deputy Director for Risk Knowledge at UNGRD. “This system empowers institutions by enabling early threat identification and a more timely response, even in the country’s most secluded areas.”
As the world’s second most biodiverse country, nearly half of Colombia’s land area lies within the Amazon rainforest. Prompt wildfire detection is crucial for preserving endangered species, native forests, and the nation’s natural legacy. WFS will function as a central national platform, delivering actionable alerts to emergency services, park rangers, and government entities.
Over 700 members of the National Disaster Risk Management System, including personnel from regional and local bodies, have received training on how to use the platform. In May 2025, OroraTech’s Customer Success team conducted in-person training sessions in Bogotá, which included real-time case studies and workflows specifically adapted to Colombia’s wildfire conditions. Additionally, UNGRD has conducted more than 15 virtual and in-person training sessions nationwide to develop local expertise in operating the WFS platform.
“We are safeguarding the Amazon rainforest for the future in ways previously unattainable before the deployment of our technology,” said Martin Langer, CEO and CTO of OroraTech. “We are supporting and collaborating with UNGRD to deploy our capabilities nationwide, marking a significant achievement in wildfire management for Latin America.”
The WFS platform incorporates thermal data from more than 30 public and private satellites. It delivers low-latency alerts and maps fires as they emerge, providing a real-time common operational overview of wildfire activity. This improved coordination allows emergency teams to prioritize threats, minimize false alarms, and respond more efficiently across various regions.
Through this initiative, Colombia strengthens its wildfire monitoring and defense strategy while solidifying its leadership in environmental protection. By harnessing space-based intelligence, the country is establishing a new benchmark in Latin America for biodiversity preservation and disaster response.
